Mr. Clay Stansberry has been the Director of Bands at Legacy High School since June of 2004. Previously, Mr. Stansberry taught at Coppell High School and Lockhart Junior and Senior High Schools in Texas. Since he has been at Legacy High School, the Legacy High School Marching band has won the Colorado 5A State Marching Band Championship 10 times and the State Parade Championships 4 times (all years of its existence). The Legacy Marching Band also performed in the 2009 London, England New Year’s Day Parade, the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the 126th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California (2015) and most recently, the 2018 St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland where the Legacy Marching Band was named "Best Overall Band" of the Parade. The Legacy High School Wind Ensemble has received the “Superior with Distinction” award at the Colorado State Concert Band Festival and has been a Colorado Music Educator Association Honor Performance Ensemble at the annual convention in 2009, 2013, 2016 and 2019. The Wind Ensemble also performed at the 2017 Music for All National Concert Band Festival as a “Featured Ensemble.” The Legacy High School Jazz Band has also received superior ratings and was a featured performer at the “Dazzle,” “D-Note,”, and “Nissi’s” Jazz Clubs in the Denver Metro area. The Legacy High School Winter Guard has been a five time RMCGA Open Class State Champion and were 2009 Winter Guard International Scholastic Open Class World Championship Silver Medalists. The Legacy High School Winter Percussion Ensemble has been the RMPA Open Class State Champions twice. While at Coppell High School, Mr. Stansberry was an integral part of the Coppell Marching Band’s success as Texas State 4A Marching Band Champions and their selection to perform in the 2001 Rose Parade, amongst numerous other awards. Mr. Stansberry’s bands have also been recognized for excellence at numerous other national competitions.
Mr. Stansberry received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. And, he received his Masters of Music Degree with an emphasis in Instrumental Conducting from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. He wrote drill and music arrangements for the 350 piece “Pride of the Southland Marching Band” and worked with the University of Tennessee Wind Ensemble.
Professionally, Mr. Stansberry has received numerous awards and accolades, including: Boettcher Foundation Teacher Recognition Award; “Teacher of the Month” at Legacy High School; School Band and Orchestra Magazine’s “50 Directors That Make a Difference”; “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”; Honorable mention for the 9News “Teachers Who Care Award”; and Phi Beta Mu – Colorado Kappa Chapter – “Outstanding Young Band Director.” He holds memberships in many organizations including Colorado Bandmasters Association (Past President), Phi Beta Mu (Past President), Colorado Music Educators Association, and National Association for Music Education. He has given presentations to Music Education classes at the University of Colorado and the University of Tennessee, as well as at the Colorado Bandmasters Summer Convention and the Arizona Music Educators Association Annual Conference. He also has had the distinct pleasure of working with renowned composers Karel Husa, Carter Pann, Cindy McTee, Dan Welcher, and Wayne Oquin. The Legacy Band program has also been a part of numerous commissioning projects, including "Flashback" by Wayne Oquin, “Hold this Boy and Listen” by Carter Pann; “Heart Music” by Andrew Boysen, Jr.; “All Stars are Love” by Steven Bryant; “Donkey Rhubarb” by Ben Hjertmann; “West Wind Overture” by Julie Giroux; and “Electric Abraxas” (for Jazz Ensemble) by Javier Arau.
Mr. Stansberry maintains an active schedule as clinician and judge in Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Tennessee. Mr. Stansberry lives in Arvada, Colorado with his wife and twin daughters.
